Pipe goes into the left muffler, bounces around, goes back the opposite way and to the right into another muffler, then finally out the tip.

Chop it off for weight savings and of course, mas POWER.

Looks somewhat similar to how the exhaust on the R53 Mini Cooper S is set up
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:11 |

And turbo whistle noise!
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:12 |

What....why is there an exhaust cutout if there's no tip?
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:12 |

I would be ok with this if there weren’t 2 cutouts in the bumper.
I wonder what it would sound like if you cut off the right can and tip and installed it on the left instead of the can that’s there?
Simplify, lightness, such and such.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:13 |

Yup! Exactly :] I’m aure they did that because of the size of the car. Volvo on the other hand....

Lol exactly. Still neat in a way

There is supposed to be a cover there to be honest but it fell off at some point

There is supposed to be a cover there to be honest but it fell off at some point. Any cutting would increase turbo whistle noise as well. Never a bad thing
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:15 |

I would be alright wth it if it weren't for the fact that there's still an exhaust cutout in the bumper. Now it's just messing with my inner OCD.

![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:17 |

I actually think Mini did it for cost cutting, both mufflers are identical in construction other than input and output so they didn’t have to make a separate resonator. Also one of the most common things to due to an R53 is a “one ball” exhaust where the first muffler is cut out, which leads to a delightful exhaust tone with a lot of crackles and pops.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:17 |
|
Ohh so it's a trim level thing I'm guessing. You get both mufflers, but you only get dual tips if you get the higher trim?

It’s hard to tell in this picture, but it seems the UK Volvos with that rear bumper have the outlet on the left and the filler piece on the right. Not surprising.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:24 |

I don’t think any in the US had 2 tips.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:25 |

I remember my buddy had a mid 2000's Pontiac Sunfire in copper color and it also had “simulated” dual exhaust just like that.
We started laughing at him about it until he actually crouched down to take a look for himself. The amount of swearing that came out of his mouth after that was enough to make a priest cry.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:25 |

Does this car have a resonator as well, or is that what this is doing? Also is it normal, like FWD cars get both exhausts, but the AWD system takes up enough space they needed to do this instead for those?

Yeah no US car had it on the left or 2 tips. XC90 V8 R-design rocked 4 pipes. Not in the US doe
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:28 |

yep. Gotta be a bimetal saw with a good center bit, though. No cheaping out with a cheap wood-cutting holesaw.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:29 |

this one is AWD and both are single pipe. There is a cover that is supposed to be on the left side. they fall off all the time

Wow ... just wow.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:29 |

lots of them!
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:30 |

Meh, a 2 ball setup like that is pretty normal. Just looks funny with the missing cover. That thing is a prime to get riced out by a kid welding an Autozone tip to the muffler, to fake a dual tip setup.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:32 |
|
lol. I was being egged on by a V6 auto Camaro this weekend with quad exhausts that sounded like my little lawn mower. Hilari-ass!
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:32 |
|
yeah, the wood cutter MIGHT give 1 cut, with oil, before it tries to weld itself to the cut.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:32 |
|
At least on Subarus most of the turbo whistle is killed in the downpipe by the cat
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:34 |
|
Alternately, the centering bit might get bent or snap and leave you with no hole at all.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:39 |
|
the very few modded Volvo that come through here make some good whistling noises. Emphasis on the “very few” bit.

Question is, why do they have a cutout for a dual exhaust they never had?
![]() 04/25/2016 at 16:44 |
|
I’m not surprised, cat-backs are cheap and easy, but a new downpipe pretty much always requires a new engine calibration to run correctly and not blow the engine up in sort order.

That car need quotation marks around the AMG badge. “ //AMG”
That’d be a good troll if it was your friends car. Then again I don’t think I could be friends with someone that did that to their car.

or melt the turbo. i’ve seen that

![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:00 |

I know, but the cover wouldn’t exist if the cutout wasn’t there in the first place, which begs the question of why there is a cutout. The V70XCs have it too.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:01 |
|
Wow, that’s impressive! Engine took the over boost, but the turbo couldn’t handle the heat when it ran out of injector and leaned out?
![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:03 |
|
I don’t remember . I think they have covers. I’ve been trying to figure it out all this time

![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:24 |

Saves them money, since some of them probably do have dual tips.
![]() 04/25/2016 at 17:25 |

That’s like the reverse of this Volvo, it looks to be a single pipe that splits into duals.

Sad, you need a bigger Volvo tuning community!

Do P2 cars have this layout too? I’m tempted to have a peek under my dad’s ‘01 V70 when he gets one ;)
![]() 04/25/2016 at 18:11 |

I was under the bosses durango and the muffler setup on the normal 3.6 was to run dual most of the way back and then run both into a giant, huge, massive, collector. Then one pipe out. So they saved 3 to 4 feet of exhaust, and a chromed tip.

Correction, not when he gets one, when he gets home! (I hate typing on a mobile.)
Anyways, I can confirm that they are some of the greatest seats around! Hit the seat heater in the morning and you won’t want to ever leave. The car has 208K miles and is running strong so far, interested to see how long it will go!
